a lot of people moan today about traffic jams and roadworks while travelling in your car.
My father told me a story about when he went on day trips to blackpool which is about 60 miles away from rochdale where i live in the uk.
They used to catch a charabang, which i believe is like a big open topped car that seats about 20 to 30 people.
they used to travel at 15 mph so that meaans the actual travelling time to get to blackpool was 4 hours.
They also used to stop halfway at preston for 2 hours so that the driver could have a break.
so that meant it took 6 hours to get to blackpool
They stayed there for 2 hours
And 6 hours back
That means they were out for 14 hours just to get 2 hours at the seaside resort of blackpool, which is just 60 miles away.
And now…. I get can from York to Paris, on a train, in about 5 hours!
i am doing a project on how travelling has developed since 1930 and I would like to get something to start at.
h will try
